This bold, better-than-school-lunch, Best Ever Sloppy Joe recipe is the one you didn’t know you needed! It’s freezer-friendly and packed with flavor. And it costs less than $20 to make!

If you would’ve told me years ago that Sloppy Joes would become a favorite in our house, I probably would’ve laughed and said, “Nope, not happening!” Growing up, I only had them at school, and let’s just say, I was NOT a fan. To me, they just tasted like plain ground beef smothered in ketchup. So, I never asked my mom to make them, and honestly, I thought I had left them behind for good.

But fast-forward to now, my boys came home from school raving about a “messy meat sandwich” they loved. I said, “Let me guess…Sloppy Joe?” And just like that, I made it my mission to create a version at home that we’d all love. And let me tell you, I am officially hooked! This recipe is savory, saucy, and loaded with flavor thanks to extra garlic, onions, spices, and a bold homemade sauce that’s anything but boring.

Make the sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, mustard, and all seasonings. Set aside.
Cook the aromatics and beef: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and onion; sauté until fragrant and lightly golden, about 2–3 minutes. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess grease.
Simmer in the sauce: Pour the sauce over the meat and stir well. Simmer for 10–12 minutes until thickened and heated through, stirring occasionally. Season with additional salt/pepper to taste.
Serve: Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto toasted hamburger buns, top with sliced pickles, and enjoy!

Make It Your Own!
- Lighter Option: Swap beef for ground turkey.
- Spicy Kick: Add diced jalapeños or extra cayenne.
- Gluten-Free: Serve over roasted sweet potatoes or gluten-free buns.
- Freezer-Friendly: Let the mixture cool completely and freeze in airtight containers for up to 3 months.

Loved the recipe. It was a lil on the spicy side for my family. We had mash potatoes to mellow it out. Which is not a big deal because the heat can be adjusted. Loved the flavor though!
I’m so glad that you gave it a try!
