Living in Alabama, where mosquitoes seem to have a permanent invitation to every outdoor gathering, has taught me the value of effective mosquito repellents. While traditional bug sprays and creams can do the trick, they often come with strong scents and chemicals, which can be off-putting, especially during social gatherings.

Lately, I’ve found joy in creating my very own DIY Mosquito Repellent that not only keeps those pesky insects away but also adds a charming touch to our outdoor spaces. The combination of rosemary, lime, lemon, and essential oils creates a refreshing and pleasant aroma while repelling mosquitoes and enhancing the overall ambiance.

How to Make DIY Mosquito Repellent for a Mosquito-Free Zone

Gather your supplies to create your DIY Mosquito Repellent:

  • Rosemary sprigs
  • Lime slices
  • Lemon slices
  • Essential oils (citronella & lavender)
  • Mason jars
  • Floating candles

Start by adding your rosemary, lemon slices, and lime slices to a mason jar. Top with water, leaving enough space to accommodate the floating candle.

Next, add a few drops of the citronella and lavender essential oils to the water. These oils have been known for their ability to deter mosquitoes effectively.

Stir the mixture gently to release the fragrances and combine the ingredients.

Finally, top the mason jar with a floating candle. This not only adds a charming ambiance to your outdoor space but also helps distribute the repellent scent.

How Can Essential Oils Help to Repel Mosquitos

Essential oils, such as lavender and citronella, are known for their natural mosquito-repelling properties. Lavender gives off a floral and calming scent that mosquitoes find unpleasant, making it an effective deterrent when applied topically or diffused in the air. Citronella, on the other hand, has a strong citrusy aroma that masks the scents that attract mosquitoes, making it challenging for them to locate their prey. Both oils are great choices for creating DIY mosquito repellents.

How Long Will These Mosquito Repellent Mason Jar Luminaries Last

This will depend on your candles. I keep extra candles on hand, so if one gets low, I simply swap it out. The liquid will stay full for quite some time, but I recommend taking the time to clean the jars and add new water, fruit, and oil at least 1-2 times per week to ensure it stays fresh and potent.

What If I Don’t Have Rosemary

Feel free to swap out rosemary with basil or even peppermint or lavender. Any or all of these will work just as well!

Tips for Using Your DIY Mosquito Repellent

  • Place the mason jar with the floating candle in areas where mosquitoes are most active, such as near seating areas or gathering spots.
  • Refresh the ingredients and essential oils as needed to maintain the potency of the repellent.
  • **REMEMBER: Never leave your candles unattended, you don’t want to run the risk of them breaking and starting a fire. Use caution when using these DIY Mosquito Repellents.

With your DIY Mosquito Repellent Mason Jar Luminaries ready to go, you can now enjoy outdoor gatherings, barbecues, and evening festivities without the constant buzz of mosquitoes. Here’s to mosquito-free bliss and memorable outdoor moments!
