If you’re looking for a fun, hands-on, and nutritious snack idea, let me introduce you to one of my favorite setups—a DIY Trail Mix Table! I also included FREE Printables!

I recently put this together for a health fair with middle school students, and let me just say…it was a huge hit!

The kids absolutely loved being able to:
✔️ Choose their own ingredients
✔️ Get creative with combinations
✔️ Build a snack that felt personal and fun

And as a dietitian? I loved that they were engaging with food in a positive, no-pressure way while still creating something balanced and nourishing.
Why a DIY Trail Mix Bar is a Great Idea
This isn’t just cute, it’s actually incredibly practical and beneficial:
- ✔️ Encourages independence and choice
- ✔️ Introduces a variety of nutrient-dense foods
- ✔️ Works for health fairs, birthday parties, classrooms, and events
- ✔️ Easy to customize for different preferences and dietary needs
- ✔️ Budget-friendly and simple to set up

Ingredients I Used for My Trail Mix Table
I kept it simple, colorful, and balanced with a mix of sweet, salty, and crunchy options:
- Banana chips
- M&M’s
- Sunflower seeds
- Chex cereal
- Mini pretzels
- Cashews
- Raisins
The beauty of this setup is that you can easily swap in your own favorites like almonds, popcorn, coconut flakes, dried cranberries, or chocolate chips.

How to Set Up a DIY Trail Mix Table
1. Create a Clean, Inviting Display
Use bowls or containers to separate each ingredient so everything is easy to see and grab.
2. Label Everything
This is especially helpful for:
- Allergy awareness
- Teaching kids about ingredients
- Making the setup feel organized and interactive
3. Provide Scoops
Small scoops make it easy (and hygienic) for everyone to build their mix.
4. Add Take-Home Bags
Let guests fill their own resealable bags—it doubles as a snack and a takeaway.
5. Make It Fun!
Add signs, colors, and even a little theme to make it feel special.
